Liu Chuncao (1925-2014)

Yellow flowers and courgettes amongst green foliage
Ink and watercolour on paper, mounted and framed
33 x 44 cm (13 x 17 in)
Signed, inscribed and one seal
Condition: one minor tear, it might have been part of a large painting, otherwise very good
Provenance: property from a North American collector

Liu Chuncao was born in Guangzhou but eventually settled in Malaysia, He studied Chinese painting under the master Chen Shuren (1884-1948) and became a major figure of the Lingnan School of Painting. He was passionate about promoting Chinese culture overseas, and with that effect he participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide.

This painting with yellow gourds is typical of the work by the Lingnan school in the particular loose technique used with wet and dry brushes and in the application of colour (either one singular colour is applied or it is combined with another to create different levels of depth).
